For many years, braces were the only real orthodontic option, using a system of brackets and wires to slowly pull teeth into new positions. Invisalign has really changed the game for how patients can straighten their teeth. Patients can discreetly achieve a straighter smile using a series of clear, smooth aligners.
You may wonder how Invisalign aligners can even straighten teeth when they look so simple. It’s actually a very cool system! Each one of these aligners is designed to fit snugly over your teeth but also push them ever so slightly in a specific direction. You’ll feel a little bit of pressure when you first put on a new set. They’re just different enough from the way your teeth are now to get things moving without it hurting.
Every few weeks, you’ll get a new set of aligners to keep the movement going. At the end of your treatment, it’s interesting to line up all the aligners you used and see right there how your teeth moved throughout the months.
The Use of Invisalign Attachments
In some Invisalign cases, it’s necessary to add special attachments, or buttons, on your teeth. These are far more discreet than they sound. They’re basically little raised bits of tooth-colored material that we bond to the outside of your teeth for the aligners to “grab” onto to help the movement along. Once your treatment is done or once those specific attachments aren’t necessary anymore, we can easily remove them.
