What Is A Dental Deep Cleaning?
While a routine cleaning is a preventive service meant to help ensure you don’t get gum disease, a deep cleaning is one meant to treat gum disease. You may also hear the procedure referred to as scaling and root planing or SRP.
Does A Deep Cleaning Hurt?
While the amount will vary from patient to patient, the short answer is that you will likely experience some discomfort. The nature of gum disease causes the teeth and gums to be swollen, sensitive, and painful. So while you may experience some pain, it should not be unbearable and should dissipate within a few days. Your dentist will often apply anesthetic for your comfort.
Do Deep Cleanings Take More Than One Visit?
Oftentimes deep cleans take more than one visit. There are several reasons for this, but some of the most common:
- Insurance only covers one quadrant at a time
- Numbing the whole mouth is not ideal. Many patients find this highly uncomfortable and prefer to only have one side of their mouth numbed at a time.
- You’ll be able to feel the difference between the clean and unclean side to better know what to check for at home.
